Dental Implant FAQs
What are the advantages of dental implants?
Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth. They can help prevent the bone loss and gum recession that often accompany bridgework or dentures. Unlike bridgework, dental implants don't sacrifice the quality of adjacent teeth because teeth are not altered to support the implant. Implants offer a stability and freedom from the clicks and wobbles of dentures.
How do dental implants work?
A dental implant consists of an artificial tooth root, a post, and a restoration. The first step toward placement involves an implant dentist carefully grafting the implant root onto the jaw and allowing it to heal over a period of four to six months. After the strong titanium roots become strongly attached and the bone has healed, your general dentist can attach a beautiful porcelain crown to the implant, creating a functional, long-lasting, natural smile that you can be proud of.
I am allergic to many metals. Will I become allergic to my dental implants?
No. The implant is made of pure titanium, which is inert in the human body. This means that you will not have an allergic reaction to the dental implant.
How do I care for my dental implants?
Treat dental implants just like your natural teeth with daily brushing and flossing. It's also important that you see your periodontist/implant dentist regularly - at least every six months - to ensure that your mouth stays healthy.
