Gum Disease
Gum disease is a serious and progressive condition that affects 75% of American over age 35 and is responsible for 70% of adult tooth loss. Recent studies have named gum disease as a contributing factor for diabetes complications, low birth weights, heart disease, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, and respiratory problems.
Oftentimes people don't know they have gum disease because initial symptoms can be mild - like painless swelling, redness, or bleeding during teeth brushing. On occasion, a patient may have some sensitivity. However, left untreated, gum disease cannot subside. The bacteria that gather at the gum line begin to break the bond between the teeth and gums. Pockets form, and the atmosphere inside the pockets is perfect for bacterial growth. Gums can recede, patients experience pain, bad breath, and loosening teeth. When gum disease advances to periodontitis, your general dentist may refer you to Dr. Robertson for periodontal therapy.
Dr. Robertson, as a board-certified periodontist, has the training and experience to reverse the damage caused by gum disease. She provides vertical translation and soft-tissue grafting to restore lost gum tissue and overall oral health.
